AJCLA General Update - LSD, CACC Conferences, Summer Events, and Dues Payments to Remain an AJCLA Member

Hello AJCLA Members,

We look forward to seeing our colleagues at the LSD Conference scheduled for June 18-19, 2024. Due to the Oilers inspiring playoff run, and the schedule for the Stanley Cup final, the AJCLA will not be holding an event during the Conference this year. However, we do plan to hold social events in the summer in both cities. We hope to see you there, and will send further details as to those events when available.

Two members of our Executive will also be attending the Canadian Association of Crown Counsel Spring Conference this year in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This will be a valuable opportunity to learn from and liaise with other Provincial organizations, and we will update the membership as to what occurs at the Conference. This will be the second CACC Conference in as many years that we been able to attend due to our renewed strength…

Salary Information and the Salary Grid

Hello AJCLA Members,

With the recent communication regarding our raises and pay parity with the Crown prosecutors, and the updating of salaries in 1GX, the AJCLA is looking for individual Members to provide information, to our general email account at albertajcla@gmail.com, regarding salaries (and any issues you might consider to be present with your new salary). Despite the welcome news of these salary increases, there still appears to be a lack of clarity and confusion surrounding the applicable salaries for different steps within the Legal Officer classifications, other than on an individual basis. It is expected, however, that we have much, if not all, of this information within our own Membership.

Any personal information related to the below will be kept confidential and not further disseminated. The purpose of this request for information is to create our own salary chart to determine the rates that different members are being paid…

Thank you, AJCLA

I firmly believe AJCLA helped us get the salary increase. Thank you to the current and past executive for their leadership, and to the members for their support. There is power in numbers!

Response from the Public Service Commissioner and letter to A/DM Stushnoff requesting meeting with A/DM and Minister of Justice

Good evening AJCLA membership,

On Friday, September 8, 2023, after end of day, the Public Service Commissioner, Heather Caltagirone, sent the attached response to the ACJLA's August 22, 2023 letter to her. The response is wholly unresponsive to the concerns raised or information requested by the AJCLA as to the compensation review process.

The AJCLA has therefore sent the attached letter to Acting Deputy Minister Stushnoff requesting a meeting with her and Minister of Justice Amery. We view the refusal to engage with or provide information to employees on this topic as unacceptable.

We will continue to provide the membership with any material information we receive on this subject.

Sincerely,

AJCLA Executive

Meeting with Legal Services Division Leadership and August 22, 2023 Letter to the Public Service Commissioner

On August 3, 2023, members of the AJCLA executive met with Acting ADM Marie Strauss and Acting ED Nancy McCurdy to discuss proposed salary adjustments for legal officers. Marie expressed the following:

• Since the election, Marie in her role as acting ADM has sent a written request to the PSC for increases to the LSD legal officer salary structure seeking parity with ACPS.

• This is now a matter before the PSC. Although the framework for this decision is set out in section 13 of the Public Service Act, she was unaware of the detailed internal process of the PSC. Marie was unable to provide a timeline for when the PSC might make a decision to recommend the changes to the salary ranges.

• The Minister of Justice is aware of this issue and has expressed that he is “100% supportive” of the proposed salary increases and “expected a change very soon”,…
